Wetpaint Raises the Bar on Wiki Customization for Consumers

New customization capabilities help users easily add calendars, videos, polls, instant messaging, RSS, and more for free

February 6, 2007 - Wetpaint (www.wetpaint.com), the consumer-friendly Wiki for publishing and collaborating online, today announced the debut of several new customization and ease-of-use features, including Wetpaint Widgets, custom URL domain mapping, autolinking, and more. Raising the bar for online collaboration, the new features further advance Wetpaint’s commitment to empowering anyone to build free websites and immediately start sharing their passions and interests online.

Since the June 2006 launch of Wetpaint's publishing platform, more than 200,000 Wikis have been created by everyday consumers who are going beyond the “you” of blogs and social networks to connect with groups of “we” to dynamically create collective websites faster and easier than ever before. Collaborating on topics ranging from the 2008 elections to surviving cancer to dating to favorite television shows like Lost and Jericho, consumers are flocking to Wetpaint sites in search of community-based thinking.

“I immediately fell in love with Wetpaint because it was so simple to get up and running,” said Sue Bueti, creator of a fan Wiki for the television drama Boston Legal (http://bostonlegal.wetpaint.com), one of the most popular sites in the Wetpaint network. “The EasyEdit interface was so simple to master. I’d recommend Wetpaint to anybody.”

“The universe of online content is being transformed as more and more people participate by publishing their own writing, photos, and videos,” said Ben Elowitz, CEO of Wetpaint. “With every Wetpaint feature release, we focus on furthering this phenomenon by helping people publish, edit, and collaborate on a Wetpaint Wiki that reflects their unique passions and interests. With this release, we’re helping our users do more than ever before to tailor their Wiki sites exactly how they want them.”

Wetpaint’s New Customization and Ease-of-Use Capabilities Committed to providing consumers with the easiest end user experience, Wetpaint’s latest release includes the following new capabilities:

Wetpaint Widgets: Users can now enhance their Wetpaint Wikis by incorporating nearly any third-party widget. Additionally, Wetpaint users can add any widget that uses <embed> or <Iframe> code output. This means that applications such as Google Spreadsheets and embeddable audio players like Odeo and Radio.Blog.Club can be added to their Wetpaint Wiki. Wetpaint Widgets in the most recent release include:
    • YouTube and Google Video — embed favorite videos from YouTube or Google by simply pasting in the embed code.
    • Vizu Polls — create and publish a custom poll; results are displayed as users vote.
    • Google Calendar — display and share Google Calendars to keep the community informed of significant dates and events.
    • Photobucket Slideshows — create and display an animated slideshow of photos.
    • Meebo Instant Messaging — help visitors communicate instantly with one another using MeeboMe's easy-to-add chat widget.
    • Gabbly Chat — enable real-time discussion among community members by placing a chat window on any page.
    • Inbound RSS — keep the conversation up-to-date by adding an RSS feed of latest news.

Expanded Customization Options: The latest Wetpaint release includes additional customization and ease-of-use features that increase the ways site creators can style and present their sites, including:
  • Custom URL domain mapping — allows users to map their Wetpaint Wiki to a new or preexisting custom personal or business web domain (URL).
  • Autolinking — a tool that automatically links page contents to relevant associated pages throughout their Wetpaint site.
  • Attachments — this feature allows users to easily upload files (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel files, or Adobe PDF files) to a Wetpaint Wiki to be accessed and shared by others.
  • Tables — a feature that makes it simple for users to organize and format content on their Wetpaint site pages.
